SBDC Success Story: Keith Specialty Store, Inc.

Keith Specialty Store, Inc. is a cornerstone in Indiana County, supplying hardware and building materials to local builders and contractors since 1954. As its founders approached retirement, Jason Griffith recognized an opportunity and turned to the University of Pittsburgh’s Small Business Development Center for support in acquiring the long-established business.

Pitt SBDC Consultant Dr. Eric Swift offered practical support, including refining Jason’s business plan with research and editing assistance. Moreover, the SBDC worked closely with Jason to develop three-year financial projections, which were prepared based on his input and insights. These projections served as a roadmap for the business’s financial health and sustainability.

Jason’s successful acquisition fulfilled his dream of business ownership and saved six jobs, ensuring the livelihoods of long-time employees. Through smart financing and strong management, he honored the original owners’ legacy while achieving growth and profitability. This transition solidified the store’s position as a community fixture and exemplified how effective guidance and succession planning can lead to seamless ownership changes.
