Percy Echols II is a Pittsburgh-based glass artist, alchemist, and educator. Percy has been on the forefront of bringing plasma and neon light—materials typically associated with commercial signage—into the art world.
Percy’s love of glass began in 2011 at an introductory glassblowing class at Illinois State University. Three years later he was introduced to plasma light sculpture by artist Patrick Collentine at Pilchuck Glass School—an experience that ignited both a passion for plasma art and in mentorship.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in glass blowing, Percy moved into a year-long apprenticeship at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. The apprenticeship gave Percy access to donated neon equipment and to a growing network of artists, allowing him to create his artwork and lead workshops, classes, and collaborations centered on plasma and neon.
In 2017, Percy launched Taming Lightning, a podcast exploring neon and plasma art through conversations with artists, makers, and institutions working in the medium. Over time, Taming Lightning LLC evolved into a multifaceted business, offering classes and workshops, glass and plasma supplies, and branded merchandise. Operations are conducted online through blogs, an e-commerce platform, YouTube, and through on-site instruction in partnership with public art institutions. Percy’s goal is to make plasma and neon art more accessible by converting curiosity into knowledge and exploring the transformative potential of plasma, glass, and light.
In late 2024, Percy connected with the University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for assistance in applying to the Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator Grant offered by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. Consultant Zack Patton worked with Percy to craft a comprehensive business plan and grant application to support the expansion of Taming Lightning LLC. In the first quarter of 2025, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council announced the grant recipients, and Percy successfully secured the funding he sought.
The University of Pittsburgh SBDC maintains its partnership with Percy, providing ongoing support in marketing, promotion, social media, and other critical areas as Taming Lightning continues to grow. The Pitt SBDC is confident in Percy’s ability grow and thrive. Percy’s journey as an artist and entrepreneur exemplifies how a niche passion can evolve into a thriving business and a community-centered creative practice.
