SBDC Success Story: Balance Brewing Company

Rob Houston and Matt Gibb, the owners of Balance Brewing Company, bring an wealth of expertise to their new venture. Rob has over half a dozen years of experience in brewery operations and packaging, having worked his way up from part-time logistics to production manager at several craft breweries of varying sizes. His experience in scaling operations gives him the unique ability to navigate both small and large-scale brewing challenges. Matt, with more than seven years of professional brewing experience, transitioned from an award-winning home brewer to a skilled cellar apprentice at Hop Farm Brewery. Together, Matt and Rob combine their industry knowledge and shared passion for crafting exceptional beer, with a strong focus on community and quality.

Rob and Matt first discovered the University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center in 2024 and scheduled a consulting appointment to share their business idea and seek general guidance. They already had a strong business plan draft in place and a significant equity investment in their business. They had recently taken over a vacant brewery with fully functional equipment and were in the midst of raising capital and applying for brewery licensing. During their initial consultation, Pitt SBDC management consultant Lynne Nincke helped them understand the key steps needed to move forward and solidify their commitment to becoming business owners. The guidance they received from the Pitt SBDC was crucial in preparing them for the next stages of their venture.

Since working with the Pitt SBDC, Rob and Matt have made significant strides toward making their vision for Balance Brewing Company a reality. They’ve successfully completed their business plan, finalized their financial projections, and are moving forward with securing funding through an SBA loan. With the capital they are actively raising, Balance Brewing Company is on track to invest in a site redesign and new brewing equipment, setting the foundation for future growth.

After securing funding, Rob and Matt’s primary goal is to open their brewery doors and start generating revenue. They will continue to work closely with Lynne, regularly evaluating business operations, reviewing sales goals, and tracking performance to ensure continued growth and success.

The Pitt SBDC has played a pivotal role in helping Rob and Matt refine their business strategy and solidify their foundation. Through their commitment and the resources provided by the SBDC, Rob and Matt are not only building a thriving business but also contributing to the local community with quality craft beer and a welcoming space for Pittsburgh locals and visitors.
