SBDC Success Story – Unison Bike Lab Inc.

operator of unison bike with two examples of their bike works

Located in downtown Pittsburgh, PA, Unison Bike Lab Inc. provides custom built bicycles and accessories to cyclists who love outdoor recreation. Tom Demagall, a part-owner, has owned other Pittsburgh-based bicycle companies for over two decades. Tom’s dream was to continue providing exciting experiences for cyclists in the region.

For Tom and his business partners to make this dream a reality, he began working with the Progress Fund in 2020 to explore options for capital to begin Unison. The Progress Fund put him in touch with the University of Pittsburgh’s Small Business Development Center. As Tom developed his business plan for Unison, the Pitt SBDC was there to assist him along the way. They helped create financial projections for Tom’s loan package to ensure he had enough capital for start-up expenses, inventory, and a build out of the workshop.

After a few weeks of working with the SBDC, Tom was able to put together a package comprised of his business plan and financial projections for Unison that will allow him to go to lending institutions for a small business loan. Once he is approved for the funds, he and his partners will continue to expand Unison’s footprint in the bicycle community in the region.

The SBDC will continue to work in the areas of marketing, promotion, and social media to bring more clients to Unison Bike Labs Inc. We are confident that Tom and the Unison Bike Labs Inc. will continue to provide the best custom bike builds in the area for years to come!
