SBDC Success Story: MixxHouse Salon

Entrepreneurship is commonly perceived as a solo journey, where individuals strive to transform an idea into a business venture. However, the owners of Pittsburgh Salon MixxHouse challenge this notion, firmly believing that collaboration is at the heart of business success.

With over 50 years of collective salon experience, friends and professional stylists Ashley Sciulli, Kristy Finley, and Angela Hubert decided to merge their expertise and open their own salon. They aptly named their venture MixxHouse, reflecting the diverse blend of skills and talents that each brings to the salon.

After finding the perfect location in Pittsburgh’s North Hills, the trio faced the challenge of securing funding for building renovations, furniture, inventory, and more. They sought assistance from SBA preferred lender KeyBank but found they needed additional documents to be approved for financing. The bank directed them to the University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center where they worked with SBDC consultant Jonny Gamble to create a comprehensive business plan and financial projections. With the help of the Pitt SBDC and Jonny’s expertise, Ashley, Kristy, and Angela successfully secured the loans needed to bring their business vision to life.

Since opening the salon doors in October 2023, MixxHouse has succeeded beyond expectations. Ashley, Kristy, and Angela have retained and expanded their clientele base, hired an additional stylist, and have partnered with outside businesses to further their reach. MixxHouse is a vibrant and inviting space, reflective of the enthusiasm and joy that Ashley, Kristy and Angela bring to their work.

Entrepreneurship comes in many shapes and sizes, but if there is anything to be learned from MixxHouse, it is that the most successful businesses are often the result of effective collaboration, authentic relationships, and community support.
